Why this is important to Wisconsin businesses: Renewable energy will play an important role in meeting these targets.

In 2017, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) unveiled its “Energy Strategy 2050,” which includes key initiatives the country is undertaking to ensure that its total energy mix consists of clean coal, gas, nuclear energy, solar energy, wind power and biofuels. By 2050, the UAE wants 50 percent of its total energy to be from clean energy sources, and for the carbon footprint of power generation be reduced by 70 percent. To enhance its economic development and meet increasing energy demand, the UAE plans to invest $600 billion in energy and renewables by 2050. In 2017, the UAE invested $2.2 billion in this industry, indicating that the country is off to a good start in pursuing its renewable energy goals.

Industry highlights

  • The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) unveiled the first-of-its-kind project in the Gulf Cooperative Council (GCC) region, a pumped storage hydroelectric power station that will produce 250MW of power.
  • DEWA is installing photovoltaic panels on rooftops to utilize solar power to produce electricity, as well as installing smart meters in buildings.
  • In 2017, the UAE Ministry of Energy introduced the Water Security Strategy 2036, which aims to improve the interconnectivity of water networks, water storage, desalination capabilities, and recycling of water. Other key areas of focus are increasing the water productivity index to $110 per cubic meter and increasing utilization of treated water to 95 percent.
  • The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE) has developed various strategic programs to ensure efficient cooling technologies are being implemented in the country. These programs include green building regulations for new buildings to improve the quality of insulation, which will inevitably reduce the need for cooling and improve the efficiency of cooling systems, and standards and labeling programs to ensure that only energy-efficient products are being imported into the country.
