France wants consumers and farmers to go organic.
Agence BIO, France’s agency for promoting organic agriculture, unveiled a campaign called “C’est Bio la France”—which means “France is organic”—in February 2025 to persuade consumers to eat more organic foods. The ads highlight the significance of organic food as part of the nation’s culinary heritage and as a symbol of its culture of eating well.
The push for organic enthusiasm is part of a larger strategy aimed at turning 18% of France’s agricultural land organic by 2027, up from the current 10%.
According to Eurofruit, the French market for organic fruits and vegetables is growing again in 2025 after a couple of challenging years. Inflation as high as 10.5% in 2023 prompted French supermarkets to pare their organic offerings, resulting in a drop in sales. In 2024, however, the inflation rate fell to 1.5% and the organics market has started rising over the past six months, Emmanuel Eichner, vice president of the organic trade group Interbio Occitanie, told Eurofruit.
Even with declines over the past several years, France is the second-largest market for organic food in Europe, behind Germany. Sales of organic foods in France totaled €12 billion ($14 billion USD) in 2023 and 2024, Agence BIO reported. More than 5.7% of household food consumption is devoted to organic products, and 60% of French people said they had eaten organic foods at least once a month, over the past 12 months.
France ranked fifth among European countries in the value of organic sales per person, behind Denmark, Austria, Sweden, and Luxemburg, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Global Agricultural Information Network.
Health concerns are the main reason that consumers in France choose organic foods, followed by environmental issues, and ethical and social values. More than 80% of French people believe that organic farming contributes to the preservation of the environment, soil quality, and water resources, while 60% believe that organic farming allows producers to be paid adequately, according to BiO Reporter International.
France has a well-developed organic market with a diverse range of products and a robust distribution network that includes supermarkets, specialty shops, small businesses, and direct sales.
The region with the highest concentration of organic farming is Occitanie, with 22% of the country’s organic production, according to The Connexion.
France imports a variety of organic food products from the US, particularly in niche and specialty categories. In 2024, French food, beverage, and agricultural imports from the U.S. reached $7.6 billion, according to a 2025 report issued by the two governments.
France is a key importer of U.S. fish and seafood, dried fruits and nuts, beverages, snacks, and specialty foods including organic and kosher food products.
Wisconsin, a national leader in organic production, could have significant market opportunities to supply innovative organic foods in France.
