Why This is Important to Wisconsin: With Wisconsin’s expertise in agriculture and food processing, equipment manufacturers could find opportunities in Mexico.
Mexico’s packaging industry is showing continued growth, and much of that involves food and beverage canning.
A report by PMMI, the Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, said the food and beverage industry is the main purchaser of packaging equipment in Mexico, accounting for about 50% of sales.
In 2021, 62.7 billion units of packaging machinery were sold for food processing in Mexico. By 2025, as many as 65 billion units are projected to be sold for that sector.
E-commerce is credited with driving packaging machinery sales, the report said. Some companies are redesigning their products to make the packaging less vulnerable to damage during shipment.
Meanwhile, the second phase of Mexico’s packaging label requirements took effect in October 2023. Food products have to carry labels if they have excess trans fats. That includes warning labels on the front of the package for excessive sugars, fats, and sodium.
Wisconsin exporters who want to find out more about the needs of the packaging industry in Mexico can considering attending EXPO PACK, the major packaging and processing conference in Latin America. Held in Mexico each year, it attracts more than 700 visitors with products for a wide variety of industries.
