Why This is Important to Wisconsin: Wisconsin companies that provide products to the arts and handicrafts community may find opportunities to become suppliers.
If there is a product that tourists almost universally like to bring home from Mexico, it is a handcrafted item—perhaps a woven blanket, a wood carving, or a sculpted and painted vessel.
The handicrafts market in Mexico is growing, especially with the support of online sales, and it is supported by Mexico’s government.
Sales of handicrafts by the country’s artisans were expected to reach $11.8 billion in 2025 with projections to hit $24.6 billion by 2034, according to IMARC Group research.
The report cites increasing demand for traditional and locally produced items, consumer interest in sustainable and eco-friendly products, and the growing influence and use of digital platforms. Government efforts to promote cultural heritage also have boosted the arts and crafts market.
Online marketplaces such as Etsy and Amazon have transformed handicraft sales from street booths to global e-commerce access. For example, Amazon Handmade’s Made in Mexico storefront sells more than 130,000 products crafted by more than 3,000 Mexican artisans, the IMARC report said. Many of the products highlight traditional crafts in textiles, ceramics, wood, and jewelry.
Grand View Horizon research is even more bullish, projecting the Mexican handicraft market to soar to $40 billion by 2030. Grand View said woodwork was the largest revenue generating product category in 2023; glassware was the most lucrative product category and expected to show the fastest growth.
Mexico’s government has an organization to support its folk art and handicrafts artisans. The National Fund for the Promotion of Artisanal Creation, known as FONART, was established in 1974 and incorporated into the Ministry of Culture in 2020. Its objective is to promote, support, foster, and disseminate the country’s artisanal activity. It provides technical and administrative assistance to artisans, holds competitions, and displays the arts and crafts in its shops for purchase by the public.
Wisconsin companies that provide supplies for the arts and crafts market may find opportunities to disseminate their products in Mexico.
