Why This is Important to Wisconsin: Wisconsin companies that produce equipment, ingredients, or probiotic products may benefit.
The probiotics market worldwide is poised for significant growth, driven by the rising prevalence of digestive disorders, the development of new products, and the increasing acceptance of probiotics as a way to improve gut health. In Mexico, probiotic food supplements are gaining popularity for those reasons, as well as increasing interest in healthy foods and preventive health care.
Estimates of the market size vary widely. According to DataM Intelligence, Mexico’s probiotic supplement market was valued at $55 million in 2024. With a growth rate of nearly 15% a year expected, the market could top $94 million in 2028.
Grand View Horizon pegged Mexico’s probiotics market at $107 million in 2024 with the prospect of reaching $163.5 million by 2030. Meanwhile, IMARC Group says Mexico’s probiotics market hit $811 million in 2024 and could jump to nearly $1.5 billion by 2033.
According to a 2018 report by Kerry, Latin America presents one of the largest opportunities for probiotic fortified foods and beverages, particularly Brazil and Mexico. The two countries represent more than half the population of Latin America and the Caribbean.
The prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases as well as high rates of obesity are among the main factors that are drawing people in Mexico to probiotics, DataM Intelligence said. Diabetes is the second leading cause of death in Mexico, according to a 2022 report by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and Mexico has one of the highest obesity rates in the Organization for Economic Cooperation.
DataM Intelligence said Mexico poses a lot of opportunity for future growth, especially in rural areas where residents are less aware of probiotics, have less access to them, and where they may be too expensive. Rural residents more commonly turn to traditional remedies.
Another unmet need lies in urban areas, with a lack of convenient, on-the-go options, the DataM report said. It said many consumers are seeking gummies, chews, or ready-to-go probiotic beverages to meet their busy schedules.
Wisconsin companies with probiotic products may find opportunities in Mexico.
