The work-life balance and flexibility at WEDC are great. I came from a job where I had very strict hours and minimal flexibility. WEDC has allowed me to attend to family needs and life changes. I could not more grateful for the support from my team and WEDC as a whole. It is a great feeling working for a company that puts their employees first. WEDC has been on my radar for years as a place I wanted to work and it has totally exceeded my expectations! I love working with the statewide team and knowing we're all marching to the beat of the same drum. The shared mission contributes to a positive and collaborative work environment, and there is great priority on communication within the organization. I also feel supported, as well as counted on, in sharing and growing my professional skills—and valued for my unique perspectives in the workplace. Ray French Business and Community Development
It is honestly like a big family at WEDC. Everyone is always so helpful and ready to assist one another. Everyone has the opportunity to share ideas and opinions, and it is never just the top-level executives making the decision—it is everyone. I have always had the opportunity to have my voice heard and been able to be part of the implementation team on changes I have recommended. Everyone I have worked with has had the same opportunities for growth and development and is supported throughout WEDC. WEDC is not your normal 9 to 5; it is a place to thrive, grow, and be part of something special, all while doing it together. Shawn Theis Strategic Investment & Evaluation
City, State As a WEDC employee, the value placed on work-life balance and your personal well-being is not just a tagline from a human resources brochure; it's woven into every aspect of the culture. Supervisors actually encourage you to take PTO and are genuinely interested in how you're doing, both professionally and personally. The balance between my work life and my personal life, combined with the care expressed by everyone at WEDC, have made this easily the most enjoyable career experience I've ever had. What does WEDC do?

WEDC leads economic development efforts for the state by providing resources, operational support, and financial assistance to companies, partners, and communities in Wisconsin. Working with more than 600 partners across the state, including regional economic development organizations, academic institutions, and industry clusters, WEDC develops and delivers solutions that help businesses, communities, and people maximize their potential in Wisconsin.

What is the history of WEDC?

WEDC is a public-private corporation created by 2011 Wisconsin Act 7 to replace the former Department of Commerce. The impetus for WEDC resulted from a 2010 report titled “Be Bold Wisconsin: The Wisconsin Competitiveness Study” that recommended a nonpolitical authority be created to design and deliver a statewide economic development strategy.

What does it mean to be quasi-public-private?

WEDC features the nimbleness of a private organization but receives funding from, is accountable to, and is overseen by the State of Wisconsin. It’s led by a CEO and a chief operating officer who are appointed by the governor and guided by a 16-member Board of Directors.

I have never had such a positive work experience as I’ve had at WEDC. I joined the team last summer and have felt incredibly supported, appreciated, and respected since I began working here. My supervisor is very understanding and took the time to learn how to best communicate with me and support my work. My team is always ready to answer questions or assist with a project and there is a real sense of camaraderie. Many companies claim to offer an open, encouraging, and positive culture; WEDC actually delivers.
