WHY IMPORTANT TO WISCONSIN: Australia’s emergency response organizations are investing in new and improved technology and first responder equipment, presenting an opportunity for Wisconsin companies with relevant expertise.
Australia has launched a multiyear plan for a massive upgrade of its emergency response equipment and services.
The Disaster Ready Fund will provide up to $1 billion AUD ($650 million USD) over a five-year period that began July 1, 2023. The goal is to better prepare local communities to reduce the impact of natural hazards and avert disasters such as bushfires, floods, and storms.
The first round of funding provided $200 million AUD ($129 million USD) for 185 projects in 2023-24. They include adding culverts, building rock walls, installing sensor technology, and providing mental health support to young people who have been impacted by a natural disaster.
At least one Wisconsin company—Oshkosh Airport Products, a division of Oshkosh Corporation’s Pierce Manufacturing subsidiary—has received an order for four aircraft rescue and firefighting electric vehicles. The vehicles are intended for use at the new Western Sydney International Airport, which is scheduled to open in 2026.
Other projects in the works include installing technology in New South Wales to help determine the most effective emergency response to a disaster, updating mobile radio systems in Victoria’s emergency vehicles, and testing a sensor system in New South Wales to better predict potential flooding impact.
Wisconsin companies with equipment or technology that serve emergency responders could find opportunities to partner with local governments or businesses in Australia.
