Why this is important to Wisconsin businesses: Wisconsin companies could both share their own strengths and learn from the country’s cutting-edge technologies and advanced production systems.
Germany’s aerospace and aviation industry is one of the world leaders.
With revenues of €39 billion ($44.5 billion USD) in 2022 and more than 100,000 employees, Germany has the third-largest aerospace and defense market in Europe, behind only the United Kingdom and France, according to the U.S. International Trade Administration (ITA). Its sector includes a wide range of manufacturers, suppliers, and research institutions.
Germany is known for its precision engineering, advanced manufacturing capabilities, and commitment to sustainability. Every aircraft in the world contains technology made there, according to Germany Trade & Invest, the country’s economic development agency.
One of every six passenger aircraft assembled worldwide—17% of global aircraft production—comes from Germany. It is home to more than 200 companies in the sector, including major manufacturers such as Airbus and MTU Aero Engines. The sector includes companies and organizations involved in commercial aviation, defense, space technology, and unmanned aerial vehicles.
Germany also has set environmental goals. In a June 2022 paper, the government announced its aim to be carbon dioxide-neutral by 2045, and called on the aerospace industry to play a role in reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
Wisconsin companies in the aerospace industry could participate by exploring partnerships with German companies in precision engineering, composite materials, and advanced manufacturing processes, or they could seek collaborations on innovative technologies or intellectual property. They could also offer expertise in environmental sustainability.
