Why this is important to Wisconsin businesses:

The new regulations are expected to make it easier for Wisconsin food businesses to sell their products in the market.

India has adopted a series of new rules affecting food imports.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) says it is streamlining clearance procedures for certain imported ingredients and food items, cutting the time and cost for importers.

Here is how these regulations may affect Wisconsin exporters:

  • Products categorized as high-risk are allowed to enter through 79 designated The high-risk foods include milk and milk products; egg powder; meat, poultry, fish, and related products; infant foods and nutrition products; and nutraceuticals, health supplements, and foods for medical purposes.
  • An August 2022 order that all milk, pork, fish, and related products must have a health certificate issued by an authority in the exporting country was delayed from the initial January 2023 start to March 2023 and now is postponed until further notice.
  • The customs department no longer needs FSSAI clearance to import food ingredients that are meant to be exported or used in value-added products for export.

The importers will need to declare that the foods they are bringing in are not for domestic use, according to the India Press Agency.

Wisconsin exported $295 million worth of products of all types to India in 2022.
