Why this is important to Wisconsin businesses: Rapid expansion is creating opportunities for Wisconsin companies that specialize in food production, automation technology, and sustainable packaging.
Food plays a big role in Poland’s economy—not just for its own population but also for consumers around the globe.
Poland is one of the European Union’s (EU’s) largest food exporters, with poultry, frozen fruits and vegetables, apple juice, and confectionery among its most popular products. Exports of agricultural products and processed food amounted to a record €51.8 billion ($60.3 billion USD) in value in 2023, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. That’s an increase of 8.1% from the previous year, and represented 15% of Poland’s total exports, according to WorldFood Poland.
To meet the rising demand, Polish companies are investing in expanding and modernizing their facilities. Maspex, the largest privately-owned food industry company, is pumping $176 million into new and updated production capacities and technologies. Projects include building a new manufacturing plant and adding to the company’s headquarters in Wadowice, as well as expanding production facilities in three factories in Poland and one in Romania, according to a Poland Weekly news article.
The EU is the biggest buyer of Poland’s agrifood products, with 74% of those exports going to EU countries. In the U.S., dairy products, cold cuts, and fruit preserves are the most popular Polish food products, according to WorldFood Poland.
Poland’s economy continues steady growth. The gross domestic product is expected to rise 2.8% in 2024 and 3.4% in 2025. A decrease in inflation and a rise in salaries and social benefits are boosting consumer spending.
Wisconsin companies that specialize in automation equipment, robotic and smart manufacturing may find opportunities in Poland as the country focuses on efficiency, sustainability, and recyclable packaging.
