The canning industry is one of Wisconsin’s traditional strengths as well.
Even as consumers are increasingly seeking out fresh, organic, farm-to-table foods, the market for canned foods is gaining ground, too. Mexico is part of that trend.
The global canned food market reached $96.5 billion in 2022 and is expected to climb to $117.8 billion by 2028, according to Research and Markets. The process for preserving foods retains their nutrients and prevents decomposition.
More companies are offering organic canned foods. Convenience is also a factor: Busy lifestyles, more people in the workforce, and the availability of canned foods for online shoppers are also contributing to their popularity, the report says.
Mexico’s canned food market is expected to be $4.1 billion by 2024, another Research and Markets report says.
In Mexico, several companies are leaders in the canned foods sector:
- La Costeña was founded in 1923 and sells its products throughout Mexico and in at least 40 countries. The company has more than 600 locations worldwide. La Costeña offers more than 300 products and has three production plants in Mexico, two in the U.S., and one in South America. In the U.S., it purchased Sun Vista in 2000 and Faribault Foods in 2014.
- La Morena specializes in canned chilies. La Morena was founded in 1970 and operates plants in Puebla and Tlaxcala that produce 7 million boxes a year of chili peppers, sauces, fruits, beans, and vegetables.
- Conservas del Norte is a food processing company in the state of Sinaloa that focuses on canned vegetables, salsas, and Mexican specialties. The company also offers private labeling services.
- Grupo Herdez is a multinational company founded in 1914 that’s been listed on the Mexican Stock Exchange since 1991. The company has a presence in 21 countries, with 13 production plants and 25 distribution centers. It is a leader in the processed food sector in Mexico, where it is also known for its ice cream.
Wisconsin growers and food processors in the Mexican food category may want to keep these companies in mind as they pursue partnerships.
