Fostering community gathering
Significant private investment in downtown Mosinee brought many new audiences to the district, especially on evenings and weekends. However, a lack of any public space in the district meant that every event required closing down streets, thus limiting the number of gatherings and activities that could take place in the district. Converting an underutilized parking lot into a multi-functional public space would allow civic organizations and downtown businesses to host additional activities and events in the district, bringing the community together and creating foot traffic for nearby businesses.
A welcoming space draws crowds

City Square Park utilizes a versatile three-season event space.
A Vibrant Spaces Grant from WEDC helped to transform an underutilized Mosinee city property and an adjacent parking lot into City Square Park. Key features of this renovation include an interactive postcard mural, enhanced lighting, a sound system, and visually striking banners. Additionally, a former storage garage was renovated into a versatile three-season event space that is designed to accommodate both public and private gatherings.
This revitalization has created a welcoming environment that encourages community interaction and enhances the local aesthetic, making City Square Park a significant asset for the city and community.
Public engagement, city support
The project has seen remarkable community involvement; notably, a mural painting party attracted 70 participants of all ages. This active participation has fostered a sense of ownership and pride among residents, contributing to the park’s lively atmosphere. The park’s prime downtown location has already spurred at least three new events, including a community 5K race organized by the nearby Mosinee Brewing Company.

Jeff Gates, Mosinee city administrator
These events not only bring people together but also stimulate local businesses, enhancing the overall vibrancy of the downtown area. The community’s enthusiasm for the park reflects a shared commitment to making City Square a central gathering spot.
Mosinee City Administrator Jeff Gates emphasized the potential for further community engagement, stating, “Even more opportunities for people to enjoy our beautiful downtown area will arise with enhancements like overhead lights that improve the nighttime experience.” This commitment to creating inviting spaces ensures that City Square Park will continue to serve as a hub for the community.
