Growth in international student enrollment benefits the state’s economy
UW-Milwaukee saw a 65% increase in this metric in just two years
The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee is a public urban research university and the largest in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. As one of Wisconsin’s two doctoral degree-granting research universities, UW-Milwaukee offers 213 degree programs and enrolls nearly 23,000 students. Higher education is a significant economic export for Wisconsin, generating nearly $500 million in 2023.
Innovative recruitment practices and global partnerships
Recognizing the important contribution international students make to the university’s culture and academic life, UW-Milwaukee employed targeted strategies to expand its global recruitment. One such initiative was the university’s decision to become the first state university to hire a regional manager specifically focused on recruiting students in India. This move has been highly successful, leading to a 321% increase in students from India since 2021.
UW-Milwaukee has also pioneered innovative recruitment strategies, becoming the first Universities of Wisconsin campus to contract with recruitment agents and consultants. Currently, the university has 53 contracts with agents representing nearly 60 countries. This network of recruitment partnerships has been vital in attracting students from around the world, reinforcing the university’s position as a global hub for higher education.
Positioning Wisconsin as a premier destination for international students
All in all, UW-Milwaukee saw a remarkable 65% increase in international student enrollment between 2021 and 2023. International students now represent more than one-quarter of the university’s graduate student body and hail from 81 countries. This growth underscores the university’s commitment to expanding its global presence and fostering a diverse academic environment.
“Our commitment to fostering global partnerships not only drives innovation and research but also helps position Wisconsin as a premier destination for international students,” said Jennifer Gruenewald, director of international student and scholar services at UW–Milwaukee. “These students contribute to our economy, enrich our communities, and showcase the excellence of our academic programs. With WEDC’s support, we continue to strengthen Wisconsin’s higher education system, enhancing its value as a global export. By backing UW-Milwaukee through grants and other initiatives, WEDC is helping to elevate the university’s impact on the state’s economy and international presence.”
